NLR mentally disabled man beaten while onlookers record
NORTH LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - A mentally disabled man was badly beaten Wednesday afternoon while onlookers recorded the whole thing.
23-year-old Steve Washington is still in shock after being beaten dozens of times. There were several people watching but instead of helping him they recorded it.
"That is pure evil," said Kenyetta Washington, sister of the victim. "He didn't deserve this, that is wrong."
Washington said she broke down crying when a friend showed her videos others had posted of her brother being beaten by another man.
"Nine videos of my brother getting pure beat," she said.
In the video you can see a man, which police asked to keep anonymous to protect the victim, hitting Washington repeatedly.
"I kept telling this man, 'I don't want to fight you I don't want to fight you,'" said Washington.
But perhaps the most shocking part of it all is that most of the witnesses recorded the incident and went on to post it on Facebook where it was shared hundreds of times.
"It's evil and this generation we going to have to pray for this generation because this generation is lost," said Linda Alexander, the victim's grandmother.
Police said they are working to arrest the suspect and track down those who recorded the incident.
"This whole thing is very bothersome and it's very sad," said Sgt. Brian Dedrick, Spokesperson for North Little Rock Police. "We will find out who it is and we will make sure that justice prevails."
Washington said he wants the same but is also trying to get passed it all.
"It's time for me to just move on and be strong you know I got to go on with my life," said Washington.
Police are pursuing robbery charges because Washington's necklace was stolen during the incident.
