North Little Rock NYE ball-drop touting itself as the largest event around
NORTH LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Dozens of events are planned all over central Arkansas to ring in 2014, but one is trying to make a name for itself as the largest event around. It's the Little Rock Inaugural Ball Drop happening right across the river in North Little Rock.
Attendance wasn't what event organizers thought it would be, but the North Shore Riverwalk Park was ready for a New Year's Eve event for the masses.
"We just want this to be the big event in Little Rock," said Mindy Van Kuren, event organizer and marketing coordinator for Natural State of Music.
Natural State of Music, a new record label, is the powerhouse behind the event.
"Natural State of Music is all about Arkansas talent, growing, developing and nurturing Arkansas artists," said Van Kuren.
It's the one reason one of Tuesday night's headliners was none other than Arkansas's own Kris Allen, winner of American Idol Season 8.
"This is the place that I'm from and I'm happy to be a part of this whole thing," said Allen. "It's just a very cool opportunity."
Bow Wow, host of BET's 106 & Park will also be hosted this year's event. The group isn't sparing anything on the event they believe will become an annual one.
"Once this year is over people are not going to want to miss it after this," said Van Kuren.
The one thing people really turned out for is the big ball drop. A lit-up glass ball made specifically for the event.
"This year it's going to be dropped from a crane, but next year we're going to construct a pole just like they have in New York," said Van Kuren.
And that's what they're fashioning the event after, but without those New York City prices. Just $40 a pop - even for VIP status.
"People are really going to just get a great show and there's food vendors, there's hot chocolate, coffee, alcoholic beverages, you know something for everyone here tonight."
