      Off-duty Arkansas deputy shoots, kills man

      FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - Sebastian County authorities say an off-duty sheriff's deputy shot and killed a man who had shot at law officers in Fort Smith.Sheriff's Lt. Philip Pevehouse told the Times Record (http://bit.ly/VdnGSU ) that the deputy shot the man Saturday afternoon as the man tried to force another person to drive him away from the scene in a pickup truck that had children inside.

      Pevehouse says the deputy said the man pointed a gun at him and that he heard the gun click before he fired twice.Police Sgt. Daniel Grubbs says the man had earlier exchanged gunfire with Fort Smith officers investigating a domestic disturbance report in the area.Authorities say the dead man has not been identified. The names of the deputy and the police officers were not immediately released.
