Officer involved in shooting inside her own home
PINE BLUFF (KATV) —
A Pine Bluff police officer was involved in an early morning shooting with her boyfriend inside her own home.
The shooting occurred at approximately 2:00 Friday morning at the home of Pine Bluff officer Denise Richardson. Percy Smith, 49, sustained a gunshot wound during a struggle with Richardson.
Police say Smith left the scene and drove himself to a local hospital for treatment. He is still in the hospital but his condition is unknown at this time.
Local law enforcement officers say when they responded to the scene, they found Richardson "crying profusely" and "very upset".
Richardson told police Smith entered her house and they got into an argument. She says Smith slapped her phone out of her hand, then physically assaulted her. She pulled out her weapon and fired one shot, hitting him in the chest.
Richardson told police that she knew Smith often carried a pistol and she feared for her life.
In a statement taken from Smith at the hospital, he told police he was talking to Richardson and she told him he was crazy. When she picked up her phone to make a call, he said he took the phone from her, and that's when she drew her weapon and shot him.
The investigation has been turned over to Arkansas State Police Criminal Investigation Division.
Pine Bluff police say Lt. Richardson is on administrative leave.
