PCSSD stepping up security with new school bus cameras
PULASKI COUNTY (KATV) - Every year many students are excited for the first day of school and ready to brag about whatever new supplies or gadgets they may have. But this year the Pulaski County School District says it has something new to show off that will keep your child safe.
"Our big concern tomorrow and everyday is when are kids are here at the bus stops," said Deborah Roush, spokesperson for the PCSSD.
It's not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of school safety. But Roush says drivers and students are always a major concern for all districts.
"Tomorrow is going to be a busy day, not just for parents, not just for kids, but for motorists who are on the road," said Roush.
Roush says even though you may not have a child in school anymore, there are some things you need to be aware of. Starting tomorrow there will be over 13,000 kids waiting at stops all around the county and busses covering nearly 25,000 miles. So you're bound to come across a few.
"That's 13,000 kids that are going to be out there waiting at the stop signs, on the corners, maybe cutting across the street, who haven't been there all summer," said Roush.
But there is also an added feature on the busses that should give some nervous parents peace of mind.
"So, tomorrow, for the first time, our busses that head out will have cameras on them that will be able to tell us what's going on around those busses as well as on the bus," said Roush.
And make motorists drive a little more carefully.
"When those stop signs come out please adhere to them and we've got cameras on the busses to make sure folks do," said Roush.
Roush says a good piece of advice for anyone, kids or no kids, is to set your alarm clock at an earlier time and don't hit snooze.
"There's going to be a lot more traffic so if you want to be on time for work tomorrow perhaps leave a little bit early," she said.
Some of the roads that will be especially congested the first, second and even third day of school are Maumelle Blvd., JFK in Sherwood and main roads in West Little Rock.
