Petition calls for repeal of Texarkana tax
TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) - A group of Texarkana residents is circulating a petition calling for a special election on whether to repeal of the city's 2 percent tax on restaurant and fast food purchases.
The Texarkana Gazette reported Saturday supporters of the plan to repeal the so-called "hamburger tax" say the move would make businesses on the Arkansas side of the city more competitive and leave consumers with more money in their pockets.
Those who support the tax say the money has been used by Texarkana's Advertising and Promotion Commission to promote the city and attract tourists.
Election officials say the signatures of 1,034 registered voters - 15 percent of the number who voted in the last mayoral election - will be needed in order to put the question before voters.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press.
