Plan to develop Helena harbor years in the making

HELENA-WEST HELENA (AP) - The new company coming to Helena-West Helena's port is part of a development that's decades in the making.

In the 1990s, work on the harbor was complete and county officials promised it would attract manufacturing jobs to the poverty-ridden area.

Last year, that promise came true when Enviro Tech Chemical Services announced plans to locate at the harbor.

John Edwards, a state representative from Little Rock, helped out on the effort to bring in a new industry. Edwards tells Arkansas Business that the county was initially only hunting for a large project that would create 500 or more jobs.

Edwards says the county found success when it began marketing the harbor to smaller companies. At its groundbreaking this month, Enviro Tech said it planned to create 150 jobs.
