Helping Arkansas to a 2-0 week with wins over Southeastern Louisiana and Clemson, freshman forward Bobby Portis was named the SEC Freshman of the Week on Monday, announced by the league office.
Portis was able to garner his first weekly award by averaging 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists while shooting 67 percent (10-15) from the field. The pair of wins extended Arkansas' win streak at Bud Walton Arena to 19 games, good for a tie for fifth-best in the nation, and improved its current record to 6-2.
The only player to lead the Razorbacks in scoring and rebounding in the same game, Portis did so for the second straight contest against Southeastern Louisiana with 16 points and five rebounds. He followed with 14 points, four rebounds and three assists in a win over Clemson, just the second ACC opponent Arkansas has hosted in the 20 years of Bud Walton Arena.
Portis, who is just one two Razorbacks to start every game, has reached double figures in four straight contests and as a result ranks third on the team in scoring (11.5). He also comes in at third on the boards (4.5) thanks to 16 offensive caroms, which is good for second on the squad.
The current SEC leader in scoring (86.8), three-point percentage (.401), free throw percentage (.739), assists (16.0) and turnover margin (+5.5), Arkansas returns to Bud Walton Arena on Thursday to host Savannah State at 7 p.m.
