LITTLE ROCK (KATV) -
It has happened again. And again. And again. And again.
Little Rock men jailed in Louisiana who say they are the victims of identity theft.
And it could be a bigger problem than we realize.
Phony payroll checks are being cashed across northern Louisiana. And the people cashing those checks are using fake IDs that finger Little Rock men for the crime.
The latest victim is 42 year old Willy Williams.
Williams was just walking around his neighborhood back on August 6th when police asked to see his I.D.
A warrant popped up out of Union Parish. Williams says until he was extradited and spent five months in Farmerville, he had never been to Louisiana.
"I'm in jail for something I didn't do plus I'm in a state I don't know," says Williams. "As time rolled on I used the Lord's blessing of the God up above to keep me functioning in every day and everyday life."
Williams says he was released January 9th after he agreed to plead guilty to a lesser charge...a misdemeanor rather than a felony.
Williams is only the latest of a group of four men that we are aware of who have been wrongfully jailed in northern Louisiana.
We'll take a closer look at what has been going on tonight on Nightside.
