Range owner wants "Muslim free zone"

The owner of a Hot Springs shooting range announced recently that she does not want Muslims in her establishment. Owner Jan Morgan denied an interview opportunity but states on her website ( she's doing it out of fear for the safety of her customers. In her article titled "Why I want my range to be a Muslim free zone," she explains that "people come (to her gun range) to buy, rent, and shoot lethal weapons." She goes on to give multiple explanations on her website. Morgan says the Koran contains verses commanding hate and murder to those who refuse to submit or convert to Islam. In another reason, she shares a personal experience of two men who came into her store who spoke very little English, couldn't provide proof of U.S citizenship and wanted to rent and shoot guns. Morgan believes the two men were scaring customers.

"I understand that not all Muslims are terrorists," said Morgan on her website. "Since I have no way of discerning which Muslims will or will not kill in the name of their religion and the commands in their Koran, I choose to err the side of caution for the safety of my patrons."

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) says they've already reached out to Attorney General Eric Holder to investigate.

"Her view on the Koran is false. The Koran, in fact, teaches you not to harm people," said CAIR spokesman Ibrahim Hooper.

Hooper said they believe Morgan's wish to not allow Muslims into her range is a violation of federal law.

"It's also a violation of American principles of inclusion, tolerance and mutual understanding," said Hooper.

Morgan says on her website she doesn't believe Muslims are protected by the U.S. Constitution because "the U.S. Constitution does not protect a theocracy."

Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibits discrimination because of race, color, religion, or national origin in certain places of public accommodation, such as hotels, restaurants, and places of entertainment.
