Saline Co. official announces for state treasurer
LITTLE ROCK (AP) - The Saline County circuit clerk says he's running for state treasurer.
Republican Dennis Milligan announced Wednesday he's entering the 2014 race. Democrat Martha Shoffner resigned last week and Gov. Mike Beebe named former legislative audit chief Charles Robinson as her replacement.
Robinson will serve the remainder of Shoffner's term and can't run for election next year.
Milligan says his background as a small businessman shows he's sensitive to protecting tax money and ensuring it's used efficiently.
Milligan says he wants to place records of the state's bank accounts online and encourage more residents to use a college savings plan. The Legislature has passed new oversight requirements for the treasurer's office and Milligan says he wants to work closely with the Board of Finance.
Milligan is the first announced treasurer candidate.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
