SALINE COUNTY (KATV) - A Saline County business is destroyed after a truck crashed into it Saturday morning.
It happened around 11 a.m. in Benton. A truck carrying logs failed to stop at a stop sign and slammed into the building directly ahead. The business owner, who was inside when it all happened, said he's just happy to be alive.
"I was right in under all this stuff along with three other people," said Randy Greene, owner of Bicycle Doctor.
Green was working in his shop this morning when a log truck overturned onto his building knocking the walls in, shattering windows and bringing down much of the roof.
"I'm blessed," he said. "I realize that. I'll be in church in the morning for sure."
The building is directly in front of a T-intersection, at the mercy of drivers who are just getting off the highway.
"When I rented the place I'd seen those yellow posts out there. I asked what they were for and, yes, they told me that there were cars that had been through the building," he said.
The building has been hit several times in the past.
"They changed the intersection, I don't know how many years ago, but ever since that we've had a lot of accidents right here," said property owner James Crouch. "The building's been hit four times."
Greene, who has no insurance, and moved in just this April. He says it's a total loss.
"I'll just have to eat this up," he said.
And as for the truck driver, Green says he's lived long enough to know one thing.
"He was just a man trying to make a living like me on Saturday and if his brakes failed, they failed," he said.
The truck driver left the scene shortly after the accident with minor injuries. The property owner says he does not plan on rebuilding.
