Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington has been released after being arrested Saturday evening for public intoxication.
Benton police responded to Denton's Trotline at approximately 7:55 p.m. Saturday after a "very intoxicated individual" was reported to be getting into a vehicle.
According to the Benton Police Department, officers found Pennington, 62, sitting inside a vehicle that was not running in the parking lot.
Officers believed Pennington was intoxicated and attempted to convince him to have somebody pick him up or drive him home, at which point Pennington became belligerent with the officers and was arrested.
A news release from Lt. Kevin Russell with the Benton Police Department stated: "Given the unique situation, Pennington was not detained in the Saline County Detention Facility. Saline County Chief Deputy Bill Fields was contacted and was in agreement with releasing him to a family member."
Pennington was given citations for public intoxication and refusal to submit to arrest.
The investigation is on-going.
