LITTLE ROCK (KATV) -
The prize patrol is in town and is coming to your house with a big check and a new vehicle.
That kind of excitement is being used to cloud the judgment of many Arkansans.
Wednesday night we learned that the number one way Arkansans are targeted by scam artists is the phone call telling you have won a sweepstakes or lottery.
We called several of those people targeted ourselves and let them tell us in their own words how the scam works. Here are their comments:
"When they called it showed up as an unknown number."
"The gentleman told me that he was from Publishers Clearinghouse. And that I had won 3.5 million dollars."
"I need two forms of ID and some kind of card."
"He told us that we had to go to Walmart and get a green dot card."
"You need to go to either CVS or Walmart and you know...do the $499.00 on the gift card."
"Within five minutes of me buying the card and giving him the receipt number the money was gone."
"I called my friend and told him about it and he told me one of his co-workers did that and he wound up spending $700.00 on that card."
"They were getting people for $1,500.00 or more. With this economy it is kind of hard to earn a dollar anyway."
We visited with one Little Rock woman who lost over $2,100.00 to this scam.
Remember: when you win...when you truly win...you collect money, you don't pay money.
