RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Three cities have been crossed off the list as prospective sites for an Arkansas veterans' home.
The Arkansas Department of Veterans Affairs says sites in Fort Smith, Jacksonville and Russellville don't meet federal requirements.
The Courier newspaper in Russellville reports that Russellville and Jacksonville were rejected because the proposed sites were in industrial zones. A site in Fort Smith is considered too close to the state's existing veterans' home in Fayetteville.
A new round of proposals will be sought.
A veterans' home was shut down last year in Little Rock after being cited for health and building inspection violations.
The Legislature has approved $7.5 million in funding for a new home and the federal government is providing a $14 million match. A task force is studying prospective locations.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
