Bryant man arrested after allegedly raping 12-year-old girl

BRYANT (KATV) - A 37 year old Bryant man has been arrested, accused of sexual assault by two girls. One of the girls called her parents soon after the alleged rape, early Sunday morning.

A friend of the suspect's family tells Channel Seven that this is shocking. Michael Garrett and his wife share 4 kids; they're involved in their community and church.

The girls are 12 years old. They were staying the night at a home in Bryant Saturday when the unspeakable allegedly happened.

Sgt. Todd Crowson explains, "One of the girls called her parents. She was panicked and asked them to pick her up immediately."

The girl waited to tell her parents about the alleged rape until they left the home. Sgt. Crowson says, "She claims he came into the room and touched her inappropriately. I guess it obviously scared her, she is 12 years old." She was immediately taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital.

Michael Garrett was arrested for rape and then the second girl in the home came forward. "It had allegedly happened on other occasions but that Saturday night stems from her friend."

Four counts of sexual assault were added to Garrett's charges. "All it takes is that one ounce of courage to step forward and say I am the victim here, this is what happened to me and somebody will listen." {}

Garrett was given a $50,000 sheriff's bond and according to the Saline County inmate rooster, he has bonded out.

State police Crimes against Children is involved.

Garrett and his wife own a heating and air company and they sponsor a little league baseball team. Michael Garrett also plays on a church softball.
