Suspect in Bryant shooting was wanted for murder in Illinois
BRYANT (KATV) - The man who reportedly started shooting at a police officer late Tuesday night was wanted on murder charges in Illinois.
Bryant police responded to a burglar alarm at the Fred's Store at 3395 State Highway 5 around 11:00 Tuesday night. While checking the area, Officer Scott Johnson found an armed suspect, later identified as Thomas O'Dell, in a fenced area near the west end of the building. Investigators said that when Officer Johnson confronted O'Dell, he shot Johnson multiple times. Johnson fired back and O'Dell died of his injuries in a hospital.
Johnson was treated and released from the hospital early Wednesday morning and is expected to make a full recovery.
O'Dell was from Mattoon, Illinois. He was charged with first degree murder along with aggravated robbery in that state. Police said O'Dell also stole two vehicles from Missouri. One of those thefts was at gunpoint.
