TEXARKANA, Ark. (KTBS) - Police arrested a third juvenile Tuesday night in connection to an alleged sexual assault of a female high school student during shop class.
Police Spokesperson Kristi Mitchell told our ABC station in Texarkana, KTBS, that the investigation started January 15. Two juveniles, aged 14 and 15, were arrested on campus Tuesday. The third suspect, another 14-year-old, was arrested Tuesday night.
"Anytime the police department receives a sexual assault report, it is taken very seriously," said Mitchell, "and, yes, it's more sensitive when it does happen at our high schools."
School officials would not comment on camera but said they were notified of the incident by police and they'll be conducting their own internal investigation. The shop teacher who was on duty at the time of the incident has already been suspended with pay.
In a press release, school district officials said they hold the safety and security of all students of utmost importance and it continues to be the highest priority at Arkansas High School.
All of the vocational classrooms have surveillance cameras, according to campus officials. All the footage from that day is being reviewed.
Police and prosecutors say the expect the suspects, two of whom appeared in juvenile court Wednesday, will be tried as adults. At last check, all three suspects were still being held at a juvenile detention center in Miller County.
