Thousands sign petition for Mount St. Mary Academy teacher

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - Thousands of people signed an online petition by the nation's largest lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) civil rights organization in support of a teacher at Little Rock's Mount St. Mary Academy.

Tippi McCullough, a teacher at Mount St. Mary Academy, is in danger of losing her job after she married her girlfriend of 14 years in New Mexico earlier this week.

Since the petition was launched, just this morning more than 16-thousand people have signed it.

On Tuesday, HRC President Chad Griffin, an Arkansas native, will join McCullough and her spouse at a news conference Tuesday morning to address the issue.

Friday, Mount St. Mary Academy President/CEO Karen Flake issued the following statement:

"Out of respect for the privacy interests surrounding our personnel , we cannot discuss details about confidential personnel matters unless the employee gives us permission to discuss these matters.

"Given that we are a Catholic school, we adhere to the teachings of the Catholic Church and have a responsibility to provide a solid Catholic formation for our students.
"Sometimes adherence to these teachings may be difficult and/or unpopular. However, our mission and core values as a Catholic school require that our actions be aligned with what we believe and teach."
