NORTH LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - A mother of two was killed at her job over the weekend. She was working the overnight shift at the EZ Mart on MacArthur Drive in North Little Rock when robbers shot her. Police believe the same suspects robbed another convenience store in Jacksonville the next day.
Friends and family are expected to gather at 7 p.m. for a candlelight vigil (at EZ Mart) to remember Akiya Egeston, bring awareness to the senseless crime and plead for someone to come forward with information that leads to an arrest.
Akiya's uncle, Tony Johnson says, "She was always nice, very educated, very smart and she was ambitious." Johnson helped raise his niece. He says she was going to school and planned to buy a house for her boys. "She will do anything for her kids, everything she does is for her kids."
Johnson dropped everything in Chicago and drove to Little Rock with Akiya's mom when they got the news she was murdered. The suspects did not get away with money. "When I heard that, "murdered" it hurt more."
Akiya's mom asked to see the surveillance video that recorded her 29-year old daughter's last breath. Johnson explains, "She probably got a little comfort knowing what happened to my daughter, instead of her guessing. Of course it hurts; she sees her daughter with her hands up and shot."
Now everyone's focus is on Akiya's boys who don't quite understand mom is not coming home. They are 6 and 9 years old.
Johnson says the suspects don't have anything to loose and he wants them arrested, not just for justice for his niece but so they don't put another family through this agony. "Our family is hurt so bad and I just told them, just have faith. Just look at it as if she is in a better place."
Hours after Akiya's murder, a man robbed the Citgo on Marshall Street in Jacksonville. He threatened to shot the clerk, but she ran. Sgt. Brian Dedrick says both departments are working closely on these cases. Sgt. Dedrick says, "On the video, we feel like it is the same person. Very similar clothing, features that make us think this is going to be connected."
Police are receiving tips. The EZ Mart is giving a $10,000 reward for the person who gives information leading to an arrest.
