Two enter the race for Lt. Governor

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) - A school board member and a highway commissioner entered the race for the office of lieutenant governor Tuesday.

LRSD School Board Member Dianne Curry announced that she would seek election to the office in 2014. She would be the first woman and first African-American to hold the office.

"I thought that it might be a good way to advocate still with some of the education, economic concerns and of course health things that affect Arkansans," said Curry.

The second entry into the race is Highway Commissioner John Burkhalter. He made his name in Arkansas as a businessman and says that job creation would be his primary focus.

"I want to be a voice. I want to help small business owners, and I want to help them create small businesses, give them access to business loans and start up capital," Burkhalter told reporters in a conference call.

Burkhalter says he will not give up his seat on the highway commission during his campaign.
