UA System trustees approve online initiative

{}FORT SMITH, Ark. (AP) - University of Arkansas System trustees have approved the formation of an online university that will be designed for older students who can't accommodate the structure of a traditional university.

{}The board on Thursday endorsed what will be known as the University of Arkansas System eVersity.

{}System President Donald Bobbitt advocated the idea and had his staff develop the program. The board voted to have administrators start planning for academic governance of the project, which will draw on existing schools within the UA system.

{}Organizers of the project say they hope to attract students who are turning to for-profit institutions that offer online classes. The program also hopes to draw students who completed some college but left before getting a degree.
