University Ave. hit and run suspect arrested, victim dies
LITTLE ROCK (KATV) —
Heather Cater was struck and killed in a hit and run accident in a shopping center parking lot on University Avenue Wednesday night.
Authorities believe Deonte Jones was the driver of the Tahoe that struck and killed Cater. Jones was arrested Thursday afternoon on capital murder warrants.
Lauren Hester, Caters older sister, said the family is devastated.
"Today we start planning a funeral. I don't know where we go from here, because she held our family together," Hester said.
Lt. Carl Minden with the Pulaski County Sheriff's office said authorities were making a drug bust when Jones allegedly fled.
"He was parked in the parking lot when they made contact with him. When the plain clothed investigator identified himself as being a sheriff's deputy and showed him his badge, he put it in reverse of his parking space and fled."
According to officials, witnesses said Cater was standing near her car in the parking lot in front of her job talking to her coworkers. Authorities say Jones then drove into the parking lot hitting Cater.
Witnesses said Cater was run over then dragged 75 feet.
Hester said her sister was conscious when she got into the ambulance.
"She was telling them y'all don't have to call Layton (Cater's Husband), y'all don't have to call Layton. Then on the way there her lungs collapsed," Hester said. "Her heart was fine. Then at 12:30 a.m. they came out and told us that her right lung had collapsed again, and it was filled with blood."
