UPDATE: Suspect killed in officer-involved shooting identified
HOT SPRING COUNTY (KATV) - A high risk sex offender wanted for a string of crimes in Hot Springs led police on a chase Wednesday morning that ended in his death.
The most recent robbery 34-year-old Brandon Rennie Turner is suspected in happened around 7:30 a.m. near Bismarck. Shortly after, a Rockport officer spotted his pick-up with the license plate 524-SIS that Channel 7 News alerted viewers about Monday.
The officer attempted tried to stop him because he recognized the plate but Turner wouldn't pull over. Detective Randy Neil with the Malvern Police Department said officers from Malvern, Hot Springs and Arkansas State Police were called in to help the Rockport officer who chased Turner because he was considered armed and dangerous. They ended up in the parking lot of the Walmart at 1910 Martin Luther King Blvd on the border between Malvern and Rockport.
Once in the parking lot, the officer heard a gunshot from inside the truck so he opened fire. Turner died but authorities couldn't confirm if he shot himself or was hit by the officer. His body has been sent to the State Crime Lab to determine which happened and his Toyota Tacoma was taken in as evidence.
Walmart shopper Deborah Bays said, "It is really scary. We came over this morning. I am glad we were not the ones walking in while it was happening."
Bays was shocked to find out shots were fired in the parking lot of the most populated business in town. It's where she shops with her kids and runs into friends and family.
"It is scary to think it could be anybody that I know....That is so good that the cops found him."
Police confirmed no one other than Turner was hurt.
Detective Neil reassures the community that they are not looking for anyone else. An Arkansas State Police spokesperson said they have taken over the investigation.
