(KATV) Two months after Walgreens announced they were purchasing USA Drug stores and that nothing was going to change, they're closing 27 of the Arkansas stores in the next 60 days.
It made people question how it was going to work since so many of the USA Drug and Walgreens stores sit across the street from each other. A Walgreens spokesperson
They expect to close stores by November. USA Drug also goes by four other names (USA Drug, Super D Drug, May's Drug, Med-Z and Drug Warehouse). It is an Arkansas based company that started in Pine Bluff. The chain is known for its down home feel and discount prices. Last year they recorded 825 million in sales.
Loyal customers just learning about the deal are less than thrilled to find out their location is on the chopping block. All hot springs locations are closing and three will remain in Little Rock. Mark Cluvane is a customer at the USA Drug that sits across from Walgreens on Bowman. He says, "It's an Arkansas based business and it's going to be really a shame to see it go, I wish it wasn't too late."
Walgreens has not finalized the acquisition. This announcement is in anticipation that the ink will be dry by mid September.
27 stores are closing in Arkansas. The total is 76, about half the 144 stores in seven states they're purchasing. Plus, Channel Seven has learned those employees losing their jobs will be at the top of the list for openings at other locations.

Walgreens Statement: After careful planning and market analysis, on Monday we began to notify employees of our intent to close 14 stores in the Little Rock region, in addition to some stores in other states. Our decisions about stores closures are based on a number of considerations, including size of the market and proximity to other Walgreens and USA Drug stores and affiliates. If a store is closed, all customers will be notified of the location of a nearby Walgreens or USA Drug-affiliated store where their prescription information has been transferred. No other action is needed by pharmacy customers to have their existing prescriptions filled at any Walgreens store.
