(KATV) - Normally, Arkansans have another month until the flu virus hits the state full force, but not this year. It's already widespread and a bigger problem than it's been in a long time which could explain why there are so many cases this year.
"There's a lot of apathy because we've had several mild flu seasons in the last several years. A lot of people have skipped those shots," says Dr. Chris Pittman.
However as bad as it is right now, Dr. Pittman believes it's about to get worse -- thanks to the recent winter storm.
"Especially with power outages and people kind of grouping together, we do expect that we'll probably see a big influx of patients over the next little while just from everybody being in close contact."
The Health Department reminds everyone that it is not too late to get a flu shot. Though you won't be immune for up to two weeks following the shot, it does have some immediate benefits.
