In the University of Arkansas men's basketball team's annual Red-White scrimmage, guards Anthlon Bell and BJ Young and forward Hunter Mickelson combined for 67 points to lead the Red team to an 85-75 victory Tuesday evening at Bud Walton Arena
"Once we got in a rhythm guys started playing much better," head coach Mike Anderson said. "It was a classic case of lights, camera, action for some of the guys, especially the freshman. The guys brought their practice to the game and there were some bright spots."
The White team was unable to contain the offensive power of the Red team, whose top two scorers combined for 48 points. Leading the Red team's offensive attack was Young with 28 points. Mickelson came up big with a double-double, recording 20 points and 10 rebounds. Bell also had a great game, posting 19 points and four rebounds. The freshman also accounted for all five of the Red team's three-point makes.
Scoring big for the White team was junior forward Marshawn Powell with 22 points and six rebounds. Junior forward Coty Clarke also put together a stellar performance just shy of a double-double with eight points and 11 rebounds.
The teams were neck-and-neck throughout much of the first half, but the Red team pulled away with a 13-2 run to lead the White team 30-15. The White team responded with two three-point baskets from junior guard Kikko Haydar to close the gap to 30-21. Prior to going into the half the White team would make up some ground, coming within five, 39-34, as they went into the locker room.
Bell led the Red team in the first half with 12 points, including an impressive 4-of-5 from the three-point line. Young also tallied 10 points and four rebounds for the Red team in the first.
For the White team, Fayetteville native Kikko Haydar was the top performer in the first half, going 4-of-6 from the two and 3-of-5 from the three-point line for 11 points.
Coming out of the locker room the Red team made quick work on the floor. Young went on a run of his own scoring three consecutive baskets to put the Red team up 11, 51-40.
With 11:48 remaining in the second half, the White team cut the lead with consecutive layups by Powell, bringing the White team within five, 55-50. The Red team would answer the White team with a 11-2 run to give the Red team their largest lead of the game at 13 points.
The rest of the contest was much of the same as the Red and White team traded baskets while the White team tried to play catch up. The red team finished with a 10-point margin of victory, downing the White team 85-75.
"Some guys are starting to separate themselves," Anderson said. "It was supposed to be a fun night and it gives us some nice feedback. Guys will come back much improved. I'm encouraged with some of the play."
The White team was coached by the scribes, area writers Bob Holt of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette and Nate Allen of Nate Allen Sports Services. The Red team was coached by the radio personalities, Shawn Arnell of the "Shawn Arnell Show" and Pat Bradley of "The Zone."
The Razorback's will be back in action on Friday as they face Sam Houston State in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. at Bud Walton Arena.
