Jury duty scam

A scam claims you are wanted for failing to show up for jury duty. You can pay your way out of trouble over the phone.

LITTLE ROCK (KATV) -

Pulaski county residents have been getting phone calls from someone claiming to be with the Pulaski County Sheriff's Office.

The message is alarming and for some costly.

If a warrant was out for your arrest...the first question you would ask would be why? The answer...according to these calls...is you failed to show for jury duty.

And the call appears to be coming from an employee with the sheriff's office. If you look it up online...it seems to check out.

"The caller ID will show that it is coming from the Sheriff's office,” says Lt. Cody Burk with the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office. “But actually it is not. If you call that number you will actually reach someone but they will have no idea who you are talking about."

There is a quick and easy way out of trouble...all you have to do is pick up a green-dot money card and you can pay your fines over the phone.

No sheriff's office or government agency will ever ask you to do this...but not everybody knows that.

"I know some of the people listening to this must think...ah...I can't believe she is so naïve,” says one woman who lost $2,000.00 to this scam. “But...I like to think I'm not that naive. And I did try to check into it...you know, not as heavily as I should have obviously."

"These are some very educated people,” says Lt. Burk. “The scammer is good and he will convince them, you know, that they have got to pay this fine or they will go to jail."

At least two victims of this scam have lost a couple of thousand dollars each. That is surely enough to ensure that the scammers will be making more calls...so be ready and feel free to politely hang up.

Realtors and dental offices have also been targeted by this scam in recent weeks.
