      Abernathy's Old Fashioned Vanilla Ice Cream, 6/13/13

      3/4 cup sugar

      1/4 teaspoon salt

      1 3/4 cups whole milk

      2 eggs{} (beaten)

      1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

      1 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream

      1 vanilla bean seeded{} or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


      Combine sugar, salt and milk in a sauce pan. Bring to a low simmer.

      As soon as it starts to boil turn off the heat, pour a little of the hot milk mixture into the eggs while whisking briskly. Then while stirring briskly, add the eggs into the rest of the hot milk. Add the condensed milk, cream and vanilla. Turn heat back on and simmer until slightly thickened. Remove and cool. When cool place in a blender and blend thoroughly. Add to ice cream maker and freeze.


      If you want to add other flavors add ingredients after the mix has started to freeze (during the last 5 minutes or so). Add 1 cup fruit or 1/2 cup chocolate chips, crushed cold candy bars (etc) .


      NOTE: For Sugar Free Ice Cream: leave out the sugar. After making the custard cool the mixture and then add artificial sweetener and sugar free sweet condensed milk.
