One man is dead and another is behind bars after a domestic situation ended in a shooting at the Trumann Walmart Sunday night.

Trumann Police Chief Chad Henson told KATV content partner Region 8 News that the officers received a call around 9:15 p.m. about a domestic situation happening at the front doors of the Walmart on Industrial Park Drive.

Henson said that a man and woman, who they have not yet identified, were exiting the store. The man was also in possession of a gun.

Officers began attempting to negotiate with the suspect when another man, whom they believe to be connected with the couple, tried to intervene.

Henson told Region 8 News that it was during this confrontation that the suspect shot the male.

Officers had the suspect surrounded in the parking lot for over an hour before he surrendered peacefully and was taken into custody.

No names are being released at this time.

According to Chief Henson, multiple bystanders, including children witnessed the event unfold.

Grief counselors will be available at school Monday for the children who witnessed the shooting.

"Our community and our police department are in a tough spot right now," Henson said. Two of his police officers were involved in confronting the man and witnessed the fatal shooting.

Investigators are still working to discover why the shooting happened. More information is expected to be released later on Monday.

Chief Henson is urging anyone who was inside the store or the parking lot and may have recorded the incident on their cell phone to come forward.

"It happened at the most populous place in Trumann. It's tragic that it's happened in our community," Henson said. "A lot of people witnessed something tonight that they should have never seen. We're going to have to go through a lot of healing from here on out. It was just a terrible day."
