Four people are behind bars after officials successfully raided two gambling houses in Jefferson County late Tuesday night.

Authorities say for the last two weeks, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office, the Tri-County Drug Task Force, and the Pine Bluff Police Department have been investigating illegal gambling operations in the county.

Through the investigation, officials were led to discover two locations:

1. 8213 Highway 63 South, Jefferson County

2. 3510 W. 6th Avenue, Pine Bluff

In raiding these two locations, deputies seized almost $500,000 and removed more than 77 motherboards from gambling devices.

Authorities said the following individuals were taken into custody after they were determined to be operators of the gambling houses:

  • Zachery Smith(age 28)
  • Henry Gipson (age 69)
  • Joyce Moore (age 57)
  • Frankie Shaw (age 35)

In the past, investigators say they only arrested the operators, but this time they also cited 20 people who were gambling to hopefully get a point across.

Major Lafayette Woods, Jr. released this comment following both raids:

We don’t make laws, we enforce them and according to Arkansas law these establishments have been operating illegally. Not only is it illegal but more importantly, these type of establishments continue to negatively affect our community and its image by taking needed resources for personal gain. Since legalizing gambling, our society has become addicted in one form or another. Gambling addiction is a silent addiction and the negative affects are never felt in the short run.
Other establishments said to be operating will soon be visited, as these investigations are on-going and we will not stop until the message that gambling is illegal is clear to all those who dare try. We remain vigilant of every location operating in this fashion and want operators of these establishments to understand that there are no workarounds in order to break the law or justify illegal actions. The law is clear and we are here to enforce it.
