Man accused of shooting at Pine Bluff police found dead in jail cell

Robert Jones, 49, yelling after being arrested in an armed confrontation with Pine Bluff police.

A man accused of shooting at police during a standoff at a Pine Bluff home over the weekend was found dead in the Jefferson County jail Wednesday morning, the sheriff's office reported.

Jailers found Robert Jones, 49, unresponsive in his cell about 9 a.m., sheriff's office spokesman Maj. Lafayette Woods said. Jones was soon pronounced dead.

Woods said Jones' cause of death wasn't immediately clear. He said Jones' body will be sent to the state Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy.

Jones had been held at the jail since Saturday, when Pine Bluff police arrested him on an aggravated assault charge. Officers were called to Cypress Drive after receiving reports of a suspicious man with a gun. Police said Jones became aggressive, went into a house nearby on Circle Drive and fired at officers.

Jones surrendered to police after tactical officers fired tear gas into the home.
