A California doctor who was just hired at a Fort Smith hospital is now facing charges for allegedly sexually abusing children.

Dr. James Kohut, 57, was originally affiliated with a California hospital and surgery center in the Santa Cruz area before being hired at Sparks Neuroscience center in Fort Smith, Arkansas on May 1.

Police believe there are two victims, one under the age of ten and the second under the age of fourteen.

Kohut is facing three charges, including lewd and lascivious acts on a child and forcible lewd acts on a child.

Officials say a nurse at the facility in Santa Cruz, Rashel Brandon, was also arrested on multiple charges including the production of child pornography.

A third person is facing charges in the case according to police, but they have not released the identity of that person.

Kohut also had his license revoked for medical negligence from 2005 to 2009 in relation to two botched surgeries. He was also reprimanded for downloading and viewing pornographic material on hospital computers.

Sparks Hospital says they have now terminated his contract.

Authorities say they are still working to piece together what happened.

"At this point because it's an ongoing investigation we are unsure if there are any other victims that we are aware of, if there is anyone else that is aware of the investigation or in need of help they can reach out to the Watsonville police department"

Kohut is being held without bail in Santa Cruz Jail awaiting his arraignment.
