Jeff Long's 10 years at Arkansas: A look back
Fayetteville, Ark. (KATV) —
Jeff Long arrived in Fayetteville with high expectations and big shoes to fill.
He succeeded the legendary Frank Broyles and became just the third man in 62 years to serve as Athletics Director at Arkansas.
"The Football program demanded his attention immediately and Long delivered, hiring Bobby Petrino away from the Atlanta Falcons."
Petrino made the Hogs a winner, and while Long relished the football team's success he also tended to the school's other programs.
He hired Mike Anderson to resurrect men's basketball and oversaw memorable runs from the school's baseball and track and field programs.
In 2011, Long unveiled his master plan for Razorback Athletic Facilities, a $320 million vision to propel Arkansas sports into the next 30 years.
The future it seemed, was limitless.
However, in April of 2012, Petrino imploded in scandal, exposed for hiring his mistress, and Jeff Long did what seemed improbable in the south, he fired his successful football coach.
The move earned Long national respect, and he became a major player in college football, but the Razorbacks fortunes plummeted.
Long's Appointment of John L. Smith as an interim football coach ended in disaster. As did his move to hire coaching novice Jimmy Dykes to lead the Razorbacks woman's basketball team.
Even his celebrated hiring of Bret Bielema in Late 2012 has so far failed to improve the Hogs fortunes.
And now, its come to this, with five years left on his contract Jeff Long is fired, and Arkansas is starting over.
Jeff Long's replacement at least on an interim basis is Julie Cromer Peoples. The first woman to serve in this position at Arkansas.
Peoples came to Fayetteville in 2014 after spending time at Indiana University and the NCAA national office. At Arkansas, she has held the title of Associate Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Senior Athletics Director.
The university says it will form a search committee to hire a permanent replacement for Jeff Long. No word on whether Peoples will be a candidate.
