Little Rock Police chief finalist for new position in South Carolina

According to a press release from the Charleston Police Department in South Carolina, Little Rock Police Chief Kenton Buckner is one of five final candidates for the Charleston Police chief position.

KATV’s sister station WCIV, who has been covering the search for a new police chief, shared the news with Channel 7.

According to the release, all five candidates, including Buckner, will make a visit to Charleston next week.

Channel 7 has reached out to numerous city officials for comment.

Little Rock City Manager Bruce Moore has yet to respond. Calls made to Buckner were not returned. All city directors have been contacted for comment.

Little Rock Mayor Mark Stodola's spokesperson said Stodola had no comment.

Little Rock Police spokesman, Sergeant Steve Moore, released this statement:

The Little Rock Police Department has received numerous inquiries today regarding Chief Kenton Buckner being a candidate for the chief of police position in Charleston, South Carolina. We are acknowledging that Chief Buckner is a top five candidate for the position. To protect the integrity of the process, candidates have been asked not to make any public statements concerning their involvement.. The Little Rock Police Department will not be making a comment regarding this matter.

Sergeant Rodney Lewis, the president of the Black Police Officers Associations released this statement to KATV:

It’s a complete shock that he was actively seeking other employment opportunities. All indications pointed to Chief Kenton Buckner staying in Little Rock, and whatever issues he was facing we would be able to work through them. Certainly, we do not have an issue with him furthering his career and we support his right to do so.

KATV has reached out the Little Rock Fraternal Order of Police, but have not heard back yet.
