Man charged with manslaughter in crash that killed Little Rock teen
LITTLE ROCK (KATV) —
An Amity man has been charged with felony manslaughter in a crash that killed a Little Rock teenager last year.
Larry Shane Kuykendall, 42, surrendered to authorities Friday in the case, according to an arrest report.
Arkansas State Police reported that Kuykendall was driving a 2011 Chevrolet Silverado west on Interstate 30 in Little Rock on Jan. 24, 2017. He reportedly crashed into the back of a 2005 Nissan Titan that was parked on the median about 3:35 p.m. A passenger in the Titan, Jorge Avalos, 18, was killed.
State police spokesman trooper Liz Chapman said Sunday that the agency investigated the crash and send its findings to prosecutors, who decided to charge Kuykendall. Chapman said she did not have further information on the case.
Two months after the crash, Kuykendall was arrested on a charge of driving while intoxicated. He pleaded no contest, according to court records.
Kuykendall appeared Friday morning in Pulaski County District Court in the manslaughter case. Court records show no plea was entered.
Kuykendall was not listed on the Pulaski County jail roster Sunday.
Arkansas law defines manslaughter, in part, as when someone "recklessly causes the death of another person."
