The University of Arkansas chancellor confirms Director of Athletics Jeff Long was fired from his position.

Associate Vice Chancellor for Athletics and Senior Associate Athletics Director Julie Cromer Peoples will step in as interim director of athletics. She came to Arkansas in 2014, following successful tenures at Indiana University and the NCAA.

Long's contract provisions will be honored by the university. His contract currently runs through June 30, 2022.

In his written letter of termination to Jeff Long, Chancellor Joseph Steinmetz says he believes the decision, "is in the best interest of the athletics program and the University." The chancellor goes on to tell Long that he, "led our athletics programs with character and integrity, which I value greatly," and "helped move us forward in many ways."

The move to terminate Long comes a week after a lengthy meeting of the U of A board of Trustees at which no action was taken regarding his future.

“The decision to change leadership in our Athletics Department is not an easy one, and was made after great deliberation, discussion and thought, after consultation with the Board of Trustees and President Bobbitt,” said Chancellor Steinmetz. “Since coming to Fayetteville in 2008, Jeff has led our department with character and integrity and helped move us forward in so many ways. However, over the past year, Jeff has lost the support of many of our fans, alumni, key supporters, and members of the university leadership, support that I believe is critical in our pursuit of excellence. I want to thank Jeff for his commitment and service to our University and to the State of Arkansas and, on behalf of the Razorback Family, I want to wish Jeff and his family all of the best in the future.”

Jeff Long replaced the legendary Broyles in 2008. Prior to coming to Arkansas, he served as the University of Pittsburgh's Athletic Director.

In October of 2013, Long served as chairman of the First College Football Playoff Selection Committee.

In 2015, he was named Athletic Director of the year by Sports Business Journal and Sports Business Daily.

Long has championed and overseen the ongoing expansion of Reynolds Razorback Stadium in Fayetteville. However, a disappointing season has left many seats empty and fan dissatisfaction has grown as Long's coaching hires outside of the men's basketball program have not been trending in a positive direction.

Next, the university will identify and announce members of a search committee, representative of the university, to assist the chancellor in the search for a new vice chancellor and director of athletics.
