State police investigate 2 inmate deaths at separate correctional units

State Police are investigating after two inmates were found unresponsive, and later pronounced dead at separate correctional units over the weekend.

Officials say inmate Joshua Autry,33, was found unresponsive in his single-man cell at the East Arkansas Regional Unit in Brickeys by a correctional officer around 3:58 a.m. on Sunday.

According to the report, unit medical staff found no signs of life. Autry was then transported to the unit infirmary where he was pronounced dead at 4:22 a.m.

Autry was serving a life sentence for murder in the first degree out of Drew County.

Authorities say the second inmate, Kevin Shelton, 30, was found unresponsive in his single-man cell at the Varner Unit in Grady by unit staff around 3:35 p.m. on Sunday.

Correctional officers and medical staff provided emergency medical treatment before transporting him to the unit infirmary where he was pronounced dead at 4:02 p.m.

Shelton was serving a 20 year sentence for negligent homicide out of Pulaski County.

Arkansas State Police and the Department of Correction are conducting investigations following both inmate deaths.
