Beyond the Game update: Lyon female wrestler named all-American

Alyssa Batiste, who was interviewed in this Beyond the Game story, was honored this weekend at the national level.

The junior posted a 5-2 record to claim seventh place in the 136-lb. weight class to earn Women’s College Wrestling Association (WCWA) all-American status.

Batiste became the fourth Lyon woman wrestler to earn the national honor. Jazmin Perez and Jesse Grubbs were named WCWA All-American in 2015 and Taylor Alva garnered the national award last season.

Lyon’s Elissa Douglass came up just one win short on Saturday, posting a 2-2 mark in the 130-lb. weight class.

“I couldn’t be prouder of these girls,” said Lyon head wrestling coach Tom Erikson. “They have worked so hard this season and for Alyssa to place seventh is a great honor. I’m proud of all the girls.”

"We're making groundbreaking movements," Batiste told KATV. "We can do as much as the guys can do, if not better."
