Blake Anderson and his Red Wolves expressed both disappointment and understanding after learning Miami will not come to Jonesboro for Saturday's game.

"I mean hate it that we're not going to play it," Anderson said. "A lot of guys and staff were looking forward to it. It's been on the schedule for a while but completely understand."

"We were excited for the game this week, first home game of the year," Red Wolves senior defensive back Blaise Taylor said. "I know a lot of fans were excited about the game so it was real disappointing to find out we weren't going to play."

The University of Miami cancelled the game as south Florida braces for Hurricane Irma. ASU Athletics Director Terry Mohajir offered to move the game to Friday, which ESPN approved. He says he also offered help with flights, facilities and accommodations. Miami declined.

"Their athletic director's statement was it wasn't about coming here, it was about getting home," Mohajir said.

“To have the Miami Hurricanes coming to Jonesboro is probably as big a game as they’ve had and that’s not going to happen, so I understand the disappointment and frustration and his desire to make this game happen,’’ Miami Athletics Director Blake James told sports radio station 560 WQAM.

"Our guys could potentially be in Arkansas when there's a storm hitting this area.

"We just didn't feel comfortable that we would be able to get back here."

"At the end, it wasn't our decision to make. They made the decision they felt was safest," Anderson said.

The two teams do not share an open date in 2017, so the game will not be rescheduled this season. James, however, said he is open to playing in Jonesboro in the future.

"It doesn't change our goals, what we're trying to do," Mohajir said. "It doesn't change our coaches' goals to beat the rest of the teams on our schedule."

A-State hosts UAPB next Saturday, while Miami will take on Florida State. Click here for information on ticket refunds and exchanges.
