Every year, home improvement scams are among the top 10 consumer issues in Arkansas, according to Arkansas’s Attorney General. Martin Petty, home maintenance expert and owner of Footprints Floors, shared some valuable tips on how to avoid becoming a victim.

With 15 plus years in the business, Martin has seen many scams such as contractors not coming back to follow up on their work.

When we asked, "What qualifications should homeowners look out for when hiring a contractor to avoid being scammed?" Martin shared these tips:

  1. Only consider contractors who are licensed and insured.
  2. Ask the contractor for proof of insurance and check with the state of Arkansas to confirm a contractor’s license.

Martin also recommends for Arkansans to read reviews with a critical eye.

"Homeowners should read the most recent customer reviews and use online rating websites that are trustworthy to see what others are saying about the professional," says Petty.

Get multiple estimates is another tip Martin shared. " This includes a description of the work to be performed, materials, completion date, and the price. Cheaper is not always better, and can sometimes be a red flag," says Martin.

And once you settle on a contractor, Martin says to make sure you read every document very carefully before you sign, make sure there is no missing, important information when hiring a professional for home maintenance or renovations.
