Pet care tips during the summer months

Pets needs special attention and care when they are playing outside in the heat. Ashley Mounts with North Hills Animal Hospital offers helpful tips on handling heat and water safety for your dogs.

-Carry safe and effective products for fleas and ticks

-Never leave your pet in a parked car

-Avoid taking them on walks during the hottest part of the day

-Follow the five second rule: if you can't hold the back of your hand on the concrete for five seconds, then it's too hot for dogs to walk on

-Offer plenty of water and shade

-Know the signs of heat stroke (excessive panting, dark red gums, stumbling or collapsing, vomit, high body temperature)

-Be patient with dogs as they test out water

-Life jackets are a good idea at the lake
