Glaucoma: the silent thief of sight

Dr. Jeffery Johnson with McFarland Eye Care explains Glaucoma.

Prevent and treat it with these tips:

January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month.

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world.

Glaucoma damages the eye’s optic nerve and can result in vision loss and blindness.

There is no cure for glaucoma and vision lost from the disease cannot be restored.

At first, glaucoma has no symptoms. It causes no pain.

Early detection is the key. With early detection and treatment, you can often protect your eyes against serious vision loss.

Without treatment, people with glaucoma will slowly lose their side vision until no vision remains.

Who is at higher risk:

oAfrican Americans over age 40

oEveryone over age 60, especially Mexican Americans

oPeople with a family history of glaucoma

oANYONE can develop glaucoma.
