What is Mom Check 7?
Want to participate in Mom Check 7? It's easy. It's all about checking on your mom friends, or if you're a new mom, checking in with your support person.
New and expecting mothers: Pick a friend or family member to be your support person. On the 7th of each month, KATV will run a story as a reminder to check in with your support person. You can also refer to the Edinburgh scale if you would like to do a self assessment. Most of all, be HONEST. Don't pretend everything is okay if it's not.
Friends and family members of new mothers: On the 7th of each month, KATV will remind you to check on your new mom. If possible, visit her. If she isn't available, keep trying. (Better yet, visit with a meal!) If you need conversation starters, check out the Mom Check 7 Conversation Starters here. You can also find resources here. If she says anything that concerns you, dig deeper. Encourage her to be honest. Don't judge her. You are her safe space.
If mom or support friend feels like there may be cause for concern, it's time to talk to your doctor.
If you are having thoughts of hurting yourself or someone else, please reach out to your doctor immediately or call the National Hopeline Network at 1-800-SUICIDE (784-2433) or the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
