LRSD superintendent recommends school closures

Little Rock Superintendent Mike Poore announced Tuesday he is recommending three of the district's schools to close and one to be repurposed.

Poore shared plans about the district's facilities and budget at a meeting Tuesday afternoon.

Poore recommended closing Franklin Elementary, Wilson Elementary, and Woodruff Early Childhood Center. Poore is recommending Hamilton Alternative Learning Center to be repurposed, potentially reconfiguring to a Kindergarten through 8th grade campus and incorporating Bale Elementary.

He announced Carver Magnet would remain open.

Poore announced there would be public meetings, the first being held Wednesday at Franklin Elementary from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., and Thursday at Wilson Elementary from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.

This comes after a rally early Tuesday morning in front of the LRSD administration building.

Parents, students, teachers and community leaders have held several rallies to voice their concerns about the possible closings of schools.

The district currently faces a $11-million deficit and want to make up for it by closing schools. Besides Carver Magnet Elementary, Franklin Elementary, Wilson Elementary and Woodruff Early Childhood Center are being considered to be closed.
