Two people are dead and one person is injured in a wreck involving a car and Union Pacific train in Jefferson County.

Jefferson County PIO Major Lafayette Woods tells Channel 7 it appears the driver of the Chevrolet Cruze was preoccupied near the tracks when the train, traveling south toward Pine Bluff, collided with it near Garrett Road in Wabbaseka.

At the time of the crash, three women were in the car, which came to a rest about 30 yards from the railroad crossing and Paw-Paw Road.

The sheriff's office says the driver, identified as Geneses Dendy of Altheimer, was airlifted to Baptist Health in critical condition.

Two passengers, 27-year-old Shamri Cole-Cox of Altheimer and rear passenger 28-year-old Talisa Cannon of Altheimer, were both pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say there is no indication of alcohol being a factor in the accident.

Woods tells Channel 7 there are only stop signs at the particular railroad crossing where the crash occurred.

The sheriff's office has worked accidents at the crossing in the past. Less than 30 days ago, a fatal pedestrian accident took place at the same location.
