A Newport man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a baby, who died after a brain injury.

According to our sister station KAIT, Jackson County District Court Judge Barbara Griffin found probable cause to charge 20-year-old Benjamin Collier with the crime.

Third Judicial District Prosecuting Attorney Henry Boyce says the 10-month-old was found dead in an apartment on September 10.

“We looked at the evidence in this case very carefully and I feel we have ruled out the possibility of accidental death," Boyce stated.

According to the prosecuting attorney, evidence in the case put Collier at the scene and implicated him as being responsible for the child's injury, which caused her death.
