Three juveniles are back in custody after escaping from a youth detention center in Alexander late Wednesday night.

Bryant police say they received a call from Alexander Youth Services just after 10:30 p.m. regarding six incarcerated juveniles that were attempting to escape.

AYS staff told police that a male youth asked to go to the bathroom on this way back unlocked the rooms of at least five other male youth,

According to the staff, the youth hit them and left the dorm.

When officers arrived on scene, AYS staff had secured three juveniles, however, three had escaped under the fence, police say.

Just before 1 a.m., authorities were told the juveniles had been seen inside the Bryant Walmart.

Minutes after police arrived at the store, the juveniles were taken into custody without incident.

Since the incident, Arkansas Department of Human Services asked Rites of Passage, which runs the Alexander Youth Services facility, for a plan of correction.

DHS is also reviewing the incident and the fenced area to see what repairs or additional security features need completion.

At least one staff member of the facility was taken to the hospital.
