1. Improvised bomb, suspected psychedelic mushroom grow operation found in Arkansas home
A man was arrested in Arkansas Monday after police found drugs, weapons, and an improvised bomb in a place of residence.
A Facebook post from the Waldron Police Department stated that Fredrick George was arrested without incident after finding seven firearms, approximately 10.11 pounds of suspected marijuana, 2.1 pounds of an unknown off-white vegetable-like substance, a suspected psychedelic mushroom grow operation, and multiple items of drug paraphernalia.
Police stated that on Monday, with the assistance of the Arkansas 15th Drug Task Force, and deputies with the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, a search was conducted of a residence on East 6th Street in Waldron.

2. Police respond to possible 'active aggressor' at Arkansas high school following report of gunshot
Police responded to a possible "active aggressor" Monday afternoon at a central Arkansas high school following a report of at least one gunshot being fired inside the school.
According to North Little Rock police, officers responded shortly after 12:30 p.m. to the campus of Premier High School at 801 W. 29th St. in reference to the shots fired call.
"Officers quickly responded to the school and assisted in removing students from the location and conducted searches inside the school," police said in a news release. "The building was safely cleared and no injuries have been reported."

3. Pine Bluff police to auction off vehicles at old Plaza Hotel parking lot
The Pine Bluff Police Department announced on Friday that they will be auctioning off multiple items, including confiscated vehicles.
According to a Facebook post from the department, 37 cars will be sold at the old Plaza Hotel parking lot at #2 Convention Center Dr. on Sept. 13.

4. Obama's uncovered love letter to ex-girlfriend: 'I make love to men daily, but in the imagination'
In a 1982 letter to his then-girlfriend, former President Barack Obama wrote about having homosexual sexual fantasies, the New York Post reports.
“In regard to homosexuality, I must say that I believe this is an attempt to remove oneself from the present, a refusal perhaps to perpetuate the endless farce of earthly life,” Obama, then 21, wrote in November 1982. ”You see, I make love to men daily, but in the imagination.”
The letter, now stored at Emory University, was sent by a 21-year-old Obama to Alex McNear. The two dated during Obama’s year at Occidental College in Los Angeles.

5. 1 dead after being infected by brain-eating amoeba at Country Club of Little Rock, health department says
One person has died from an infection of a brain-eating amoeba that the Arkansas Department of Health says was likely caught from the splash pad at the Country Club of Little Rock.
According to the state's health department, they sent multiple samples from the country club's pool and splash pad to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and it was confirmed one sample from the splash pad was viable for Naegleria fowleri, a rare infection which destroys brain tissue.
The country club has voluntarily closed the pool and splash pad and there is no ongoing risk to the public related to this exposure, health officials said.

6. High school band director Tasered and arrested after refusing to stop performance, police say
There was an unusual situation after a high school football game when the band director for one of the schools was taken from the field to jail.
Johnny Mims, from Minor High School outside Birmingham, Ala., was arrested at Jackson-Olin High School on Thursday night.
Birmingham police said officers were clearing out the stadium after the game when they noticed both school bands were still playing music.

7. Arkansas Tech University president fired in unanimous vote by board of trustees
The Arkansas Tech University Board of Trustees voted unanimously during a special called meeting on Saturday to terminate the employment of ATU President Dr. Robin E. Bowen without cause, according to a news release.
Pursuant to the September 6, 2018, employment agreement between the ATU Board of Trustees and Bowen, the board is required to provide Bowen 60 days advance written notice of termination without cause. That notice was provided by the board to Bowen on Saturday, September 9, following the board meeting.
Smith stated that Dr. Russell Jones, ATU acting interim president, will continue to serve as head of administration, management and operations for Arkansas Tech during the forthcoming 60-day period and will continue in his role as interim president following the end of the 60-day period.
