Arkansas inmate jailed on murder charge dies in prison

An inmate serving life in prison for first-degree murder died Thursday in the Ouachita River Correctional Unit in Malvern.

According to the Arkansas Department of Correction, the cellmate of Robert Whitney Jr., 52, alerted staff at 2:55 a.m. that Whitney appeared to be in distress.

Correctional officers and medical staff found Whitney unresponsive in his cell and he was pronounced dead nearly 15 minutes later.

Arkansas State Police will investigate his death and the Department of Correction will also conduct an internal investigation.
